What is a Project, Really?
Before we dive into the deeper aspects of project management, let’s start with a fundamental question: What is a project? At its core, a project is a temporary endeavour undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result. Unlike ongoing business operations, which are repetitive and continuous, projects have a clear beginning and end.
Think of it this way:
Planning a wedding? That’s a project. It has a fixed timeline, budget, and a very specific goal (hopefully, a successful wedding and not a logistical disaster!).
Running a restaurant? That’s ongoing operations. You’re managing daily tasks, not a temporary initiative with a defined end goal.
Understanding this distinction is crucial for anyone stepping into project management. It helps define scope, set realistic expectations and most importantly, avoid turning your projects into never-ending operational nightmares.
